Dhoni Ki Dhulai
June 15th, 2009I possibly can’t talk of anything else today. I’m filled with anger, frustration and disappointment at the way our team lost consecutive matches, first against West Indies and now England, with the result that they are now out of the T20 World Cup. Pathetic display of cricket by the team, especially in the game against England. Examples of lousy play were there for all to see. Be it lousy bowling by Ishant Sharma or misfield by Yuvraj or pathetic batting by Gambhir, Raina, Rohit or even by Dhoni himself. But these are just examples not the reasons for our defeat. The reasons are far too many and they are listed down below.
1. Dhoni’s over confidence. The way Dhoni has conducted himself both on and off the field smacked of arrogance and over confidence in his own and the team’s capabilities. How else can you explain Jadeja being sent ahead of Yuvraj, Pathan and even Dhoni himself? How else can you explain the fact that RP Singh was not allowed to bowl his full quota of four overs? How else can you explain the bitter fact that Dhoni himself did not show the kind of urgency while he was batting? How else will you explain the inclusion of a novice like Jadeja in place of an experienced and mature Irfan Pathan? It shows that he is over confident about himself while at the same time does not really have enough confidence in people like Yuvraj and Pathan.
2. Absence of Sehwag. I don’t know whether you agree or not but the absence of Virender Sehwag is one of the main reasons for our defeat. Had Sehwag been there things would have been different. There is no doubt about this in my mind.
3. Expectations of the fans. Yeah, if we do not expect them to win always, any win that they achieve would be like a bonus. But I know, this is just being vain. But the fact is that it is our own expectation which has created immense pressure on the team and the captain. And this pressure has come to bear so heavily on the team that it could not take it.
4. Having IPL so close to the World Cup. That’s the bottom line. The tournament was too close to the World Cup. Players like Sehwag who suffered injuries during IPL could not recover in time for the championship. Also, since there was hardly any time between the two there was no practice camp as such and the players who were all playing for different teams just recently did not get sufficient time to gel with each other. Believe you me it takes time for members of a team to get back into their rhythm play as a team. And this lack of camaraderie showed in the way players conducted themselves (Remember the chaos in the team after the injury of Sehwag became known?). But tell you what? Powers that be don’t really give a damn for the World Cup. There is so much money involved in IPL that they couldn’t care less. If it means holding the IPL just before the world cup, it is just fine with them. I’m sure they will now come out and say that things like injuries are something which no one has any control over. And so, they’ll say, there is no relation between the two. But like I said, there is. Most definitely.
Well, having said what I have, I feel Dhoni needs to really sit down and think about the way ahead. He may have been Captain Cool or whatever but he has to come down to Mother Earth. He blundered big time in this tournament and is the main reason why we lost. Also, I would like to question whether the coach Gary Kirsten endorsed Dhoni’s decisions or not? Or was it that his advice was just ignored by Dhoni? And people, going by what I see, I feel it was Dhoni who single handedly made these decisions. And so he must take the blame.
APROPOS 15 JUN 09. Well, Gary Kirsten has after all agreed to the fact that IPL was too close to this tournament, although, he said that players were too tired to perform. Yeah, that too. I stand vindicated. YAHOO!!!!

I agree with you on point 1 completely. I used to be a big dhoni fan but not anymore. It was disappointing to say the least to see the team go down like this
