Gujjar reservations- wasn’t it blackmail?
June 17th, 2008
Reservations based on castes surely is not the ideal way of uplifting any community or caste. But, if some castes/communities are given this privilege, then any/all deserving castes/communities be given similar opportunities. Especially, if you consider the fact that Jats and Gujjars are both OBCs. I mean, we all know for a fact that Jats are much better off than Gujjars. Don’t we? But I’m sure we all wish Gujjars all the very best and hope that the issue is now settled once and for all. But don’t you feel our govt should give reservations to castes/communities based on both, their general financial status (considering that it would be quite impossible for the administration to take into account financial status of each family) and as percentage of total population as well? Also, what will happen to the open quota wherein even today lakhs of deserving people have to fight for few available seats? What happened to the maximum limit of 50% reservations laid down by Supreme Court, which in this case of Gujjars has been flouted? And lastly, doesn’t it appear that Rajasthan govt has been blackmailed into submission by Col Bainsla and his followers by resorting to violence and sabotage of public property and infrastructure?

No, gujjars or for that matter any community should not get any reservation. Every person's financial status should be ascertained before he/she is given any consideration under a fixed quota. Financial status should be part of the national census which is conducted for determining population.
