Heartiest congratulations to AR Rehaman & Gulzar
January 23rd, 2009Well done AR Rahman. He’s really done India proud. The very fact that he’s the first Indian to be nominated for this award makes it extra special. Also, being nominated thrice is commendable to say the very least. And not to forget that Gulzar too has been nominated for the lyrics of ‘Jai Ho!’.
I know I spoke about ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ being a British movie some time back in my post ‘Slumdog Millionaire: Don’t get too carried away!’ and I still stand by what I said. The point to be noted here is that the music by AR Rahman is purely Indian. There’s nothing British about it, or ‘Western’ for that matter. And same goes for Gulzar. Both these guys have really taken India and Indian art to another level vis-a-vis the ‘Westerners’. So here’s wishing both of them and the rest all the very best for the Oscars.
But will this be the path breaking event after which India and Indian art be considered as good as ‘Westerns’? I certainly hope so but quite frankly I’m not so sure. Are you?
