List of things I did to maintain my flat belly?
April 30th, 2009Yeah people, I’m back from Andamans after a great holiday where I had a whale of a time. Mansie too had a fantastic time, Manish less so what with Aleena in his complete care (more about him some time later). As for me I’m feeling absolutely refreshed and am now ready to get back to the grind.
You’d remember sometime ago in one of my previous posts “Getting a flat belly”, I mentioned that I had reached quite a satisfactory level of fitness in achieving a flat belly, after having my second baby through a C-Section. Now I agree that it’s not so easy but not that difficult also. It can be done, only needs the will power to do so. That’s why I gave myself a pat on the back when I achieved what I did. Having said that, now comes the most difficult part….well, maintaining a flat belly, especially when you are on a holiday where you are likely to binge and eat more than usual. But it didn’t happen with me. I did not let it. Just read on.
After reaching my goal, to enjoy the rewards of all those sweaty workouts and controlled meals, I took a break for a while and we all went on a 10-day holiday to Andamans and just freaked out and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly on the beach, swimming, snorkeling, boating and sight-seeing. And what lovely sea-food you get there. Absolutely fresh!! Being there totally spoils you. Plus after getting back, we had a wedding and some get togethers lined up to further spoil my chances of picking up my routine from where I left.
At the first chance I got to weigh and measure myself I realized there was no damage done. I was amazed to see no weight gain or increase in inches despite a long break from my diet & workouts. I had unknowingly done something right to maintain my flat belly. But how? On reflecting back I find that I made all the right moves by chance. Let me share with you what I did unconsciously.
(a) Drank lots of water as a result of which I burnt calories and was able keep my body temperature as normal. I also had lots of nariyal paani.
(b) Carried weights most part of the day, like my backpacks and my baby which was a good workout for my arms and shoulders.
(c) Walked a lot on the beach alongwith Mansie. Infact we must’ve covered more than a few miles in search of corals and shells. Mind you, walking on wet sands is not exactly effortless and is a pretty good workout for the whole body.
(d) Freaked out on seafood. This was a very good source of Omega 3 fatty acids and have absolutely low calories.
(e) Gorged on Idli Sambar which is an excellent choice for breakfast. Again good for the system and is again low calorie.
(f) For lunch I had thalis with lots of vegetables and lentils, unlike things like chole bhature or paav bhaji and that cuts out on a lot of undue fat.
(g) Swam a lot in the sea and went snorkeling which were a complete workout for the body and I came back with a beautiful tan and a damn good feeling.
I guess I made the most of my tropical island holiday and the local servings which worked in my favour. But then after having come back I had to attend a couple of weddings in the family get togethers also. Despite that I maintained my flat belly. Now, how did I do that?
(a) I had little snacks before leaving for the occasion. As food is served very late in such events that helps. Also, if you had something like a sandwich or soup before hand you don’t hog on whatever comes your way first.
(b) Even during these occasions had grilled snacks and fruit salads which really fills you up and since your bites are spaced out your system has time to digest it all. Just remember to have small portions.
(c) Had fresh fruit juice instead of packaged juice. This is a more healthy option and has less sugar content. In summers, aam panna, jal jeera and butter milk are good options.
(d) Had plain tandoori chapatis and vegetables. Avoided all kinds of stuffed paranthas and thick gravy dishes. Also had plain curd instead of boondi raita.
(e) Did not miss the dessert but had only a spoonful of each kind. In effect missed nothing but did not over do anything at the same time.
(f) As for the exercise part I guess I could hardly sit in one place with Aleena in my arms. So I was doing weights and cardio at the same time. Plus not to forget the dancing which was a fantastic way of burning calories.
I guess this was my blue print for avoiding the bulge. I did not deprive myself from enjoying my holiday or my outings but unknowingly made the right choices. I’m sharing this with you guys so that you too can go out and enjoy yourself. Just make the right moves and don’t feel guilty later but look forward to going out again and again.
This has really pepped me up so much that I intend to continue being active in making the right choices and keeping myself fit. I’ll keep sharing my experiences as I go along and I promise to do this every week from now on. See you…….Lots of luv ……..Sush
