Somalian pirates need to be tamed
November 19th, 2008The problem of Somalian pirates holding nearly the entire international community at ransom is another classic case of a local problem spiraling out of control so as to assume menacing proportions.
What’s happening guys? Somalian pirates are holding the world community at ransom, in a way. It was understandable if one odd ship was hijacked but now we are hearing about some hijacking or the other everyday. Just yesterday there was this news of a ship called Sirius Star having been hijacked by these pirates. The ship is said to be carrying around $100 million worth of oil. In all there have been more than 20 such incidents in this year alone. Why is the world community letting this happen? Why haven’t they deployed adequate forces to protect these ships? Indian govt has done it’s bit but the other nations should also chip in. Just watch this clip from MSNBC.
It’s quite clear from this video that these pirates are a menace. Just about a couple of months ago they hijacked a Japanese ship Stolt Valor which was eventually freed last week after payment of ransom. The Indian naval vessels were deployed only after this incident. Although due credit must be given to Indian govt for this yet it is quite clear that this is not enough. India cannot take on this responsibility for the entire world. Others must also chip in. The best way to do this would be that a naval force is deployed under the aegis of UN. This force would have the requisite mandate to act unilaterally. Also, the Somalian govt should also be taken to task for allowing this kind of activity from it’s shores.
