There is a new twist in the Women’s Reservation Bill. If you believe Mulayam Singh the bill will lead to more crimes against women, in the Parliament of all the places in the world. This is the same Mulayam Singh who said that he supported women’s reservation but there should be separate quotas for Dalits and Muslims in this bill. Well, if that be so does it mean that only well dressed women deserve to be eve teased? Is it that Dalit and Muslim women are not good enough or is it that since Mulayam is partial to these communities, he will take care not to whistle at women from these communities. That’s discrimination, of a different kind though. If he feels like eve teasing he should not discriminate between communities. Should he? He should eve tease them all, Jaya Prada and his daughter-in-law included who contested and lost in the last elections of Lok Sabha.

I really wonder on what grounds are Lalus and Mulayams protesting against the Women’s Bill. Their argument, is unconvincing and shaky. Even ideally, if for a moment, we think that poor Dalit women were to be indeed elected I’d damned if our highest governing bodies were to be made up of women who are absolutely illiterate and work as maids or do some such menial jobs. I really do not have anything against them but they do not have the aptitude or ability for this job, not as of now at least. As for my maid, I’m thankful to God if she completes my household chores satisfactorily, leave aside managing the country.

RJD and SP have withdrawn support and their Rajya Sabha MPs have openly said that they will do anything implying physical disruption to stop the bill from being passed. After initial hesitation JD(U) has come around to supporting it thanks to Nitish Kumar. While there is no doubt that Lalu and Mulayam Singh do have a right to protest and they may have some logic in their argument as well but frankly speaking, their protests have very little to do with logic or their good wishes for women of Muslim community or Dalits for that matter, whose cause they seem to be espousing.

The car started, yipee!!!! AC worked, stereo worked and the girls were laughing in the back seat. Thank god for small mercies!!! Hopefully nothing would go wrong now. Phew!! I was really hassled after all the events at home and wanted some peace, which is a rare commodity in my household these days.

No, SM Krishna and Shashi Tharoor are not telling the whole truth. Had they been telling the truth we would’ve known how much have they or the govt has spent on their accommodation in the five star hotels. But they choose to be evasive and so has been the hotels. I can understand these ministers being evasive but why are these hotels not giving us the details? What do they stand to loose by disclosing these details? Quite a lot actually, if you ask me. If they had their way these minsters can stay for as long as they want.

Do you guys remember the scene from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge where Farida Jalal tells her daughter that even in this age a woman is not equal to a man, wherever you may be? And that they never will be either? Well, even though the movie is more than fifteen years old the saying is still correct. Women are not equal to a man. Reasons for this are far too many to start counting. But what is worth talking about are the ways in which the Indian society in general and the Indian govt in particular treat women and are both guilty of subjugating women in ways that are typical of the Indian mindset.

Out of hundreds of allegations of fake encounter deaths why is the focus of our entire nation on Sohrabuddin and Amit Shah? Is it because a fake encounter of a Muslim is a different story than that of a Hindu? And that too because it happened in Narendra Modi's Gujarat? Why is the CBI investigating only this case and not so many others where the guilty are quite likely from the Congress party? What about numerous allegations of fake encounters in Andhra Pradesh? What about the prosecution of Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar in Sikh riots case? What about Ottavio Quattrochi?.....
