I’m referring to this column published on 12 May 10 titled Hang ‘em high where Mr Jug Suraiya says that capital punishment might make for a popular spectacular sport. He’s talking about people like Ajmal Kasab and wants such hangings to be carried out publicly in order to grab maximum eyeballs and act as a deterrent.

Further, he implies that this could actually be like a fun fair like it used to be a couple of centuries ago with vendors of snacks and souvenirs doing brisk business. He goes on to add that India is a violent society where life is cheap. And therefore, he asks, would a few, well deserved public executions further brutalize us? He further adds that this too could be a money spinning event, something like the IPL, where IPL stands for Indian Phansi League.

After the mess created by IPL I’d thought of moving on but the arrogance of Dhoni has made me revisit this issue. The man’s previous successes seem to have gone to his head. It was downright insulting to hear him smile and say that he didn’t care for people protesting against him in the streets. May I remind him that these are same people who were on the streets for more than six hours in Mumbai to welcome him and his team when they won the T20 World Cup. And at that time this guy lapped it all up. If he and his team deserved to be felicitated then they very well deserve to be kicked this time for having played like shagged out bunch of idiots, which they all seemed to be after all those parties and what happens after the parties. They never complained then and they can’t complain now. And no, I’m not exactly going to mind my language.

I was so horribly wrong when I wrote this post on Cash for Votes scam in our parliament and the sting operation conducted by CNN IBN Rajdeep Sardesai is for sale!! in Nov 08. Its not just him who is up for sale most of the news channels and newspapers are up for sale too. Rajdeep Sardesai did nothing which is not done by the media houses. And I’m not talking about a stake sale in their respective companies. I’m talking about the news content which they carry. Yes, it has been proved beyond doubt now that indeed they do sell their space for money. As luck would have it there were quite a few elections in 2009. First it was the Lok Sabha polls and then state assembly elections in not one but four states. Not too forget many other sources like numerous movie releases, book launches etc etc. And they are all sources of good unaccountable money for our media houses.

BANG BANG BANG BANG!!!!!!!! It was 7 AM Thursday, 22nd October. Election results. Where was the remote? Where did I leave it last night? Holy shit! Aleena was sleeping on the remote. And the damn thing was wet. Aleena had done susu over it. Goddamnit!!!! Can’t help it. I wiped it clean and switched on the TV. Dish TV welcomes you!! Bullshit, get lost. Where was Times Now? There it was.

The logo over here may be of Times now but whatever I’m going to say applies to all the news channels, both English as well as Hindi. They all need to get their priorities right in the first place. They need to stop sensationalizing every issue. Sure sensationalism sells but if only money was their sole aim they’d be better off doing something more productive than this.

Okay, of all the TV networks which one was the best debate on match fixing? Well, for me it was the one on Times Now where our dear old Bishen Singh Bedi appeared half drunk. At first it seemed like I was mistaken but when he started talking I was more than convinced that he was indeed three or four drinks down, at least. A couple of drinks more and I'm sure Bedi would've told Arnab Goswami," Oye, Chadd Yaar. Tainu Kee? Aye koi nai gall thodi hai. Salon se ho raya hega. CHEERS!!" or words to that effect. But you can't really blame Bedi for this. What do you expect people to be doing at nine in the evening? Good people work through the day and party in the evenings. Don't they? For that matter, Farouq Engineer who was speaking from Manchester, UK where it was around four thirty in the evening, was seen having a huge cup of coffee (or at least that's my guess) because you are supposed to have coffee at that time......
