The cover story
November 21st, 2009
The choice of photo for the cover of this week’s Newsweek is unfortunate. When it comes to Sarah Palin, this “news” magazine has relished focusing on the irrelevant rather than the relevant. The Runner’s World magazine one-page profile for which this photo was taken was all about health and fitness - a subject to which I am devoted and which is critically important to this nation. The out-of-context Newsweek approach is sexist and oh-so-expected by now. If anyone can learn anything from it: it shows why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, gender, or color of skin. The media will do anything to draw attention - even if out of context. - Sarah Palin
Sarah Palin has objected to the picture used by Newsweek magazine for their recent issue. Yeah, I agree. The picture is indeed sexist and taken out of context for sure. Here’s what the editor of the magazine, Jon Meacham had to say about the choice of the cover.
“We chose the most interesting image available to us to illustrate the theme of the cover, which is what we always try to do. We apply the same test to photographs of any public figure, male or female: does the image convey what we are saying? That is a gender-neutral standard.”
Well, if you guys did not fully understand what this guy is saying, don’t worry. Neither did Sarah Palin. But tell you what? Just beside the controversial picture are the lines- How do you solve a problem like Sarah? She’s bad news for GOP- and for everybody else, too. While Palin has taken exception to the picture she’s not objected to the article itself or even the title. But thats not really surprising. Its difficult for her to look beyond the obvious. Or may be she agrees with whats written there. Also, when she wrote those lines on Facebook she probably did not realize that this picture may not belong to Newsweek at all. She gave that shot for Runner’s World magazine who say that it was provided to Newsweek by the photographer’s stock agency without Runner’s World knowledge or permission. Actually, she could sue both Newsweek and may be even Runner’s World for this. But I guess that too is beyond the obvious for her.
And by the way, just check out what she has to say in that statement on Facebook about importance of fitness for Americans. Its critically important, she says. Not China, not recession, not even Iran. Its physical fitness which is critical for Americans. Remember, when she was picked up by McCain as Veep candidate she said in an interview that because you can see Russia from Alaska that made her into a foreign policy expert? Is it any wonder that she’s looked upon as a dumb wit by many Americans? When people heard that she was coming out with a book they were amused to say the very least. See what people have to say about her new book GOING ROGUE.
“Finally, excerpts from Sarah Palin’s new book are starting to leak out to the internet. There’s some really shocking stuff in there, complete sentences, proper grammar, really shocking stuff.” -Jimmy Fallon
Good one!! Here’s another one.
“Sarah Palin’s new autobiography doesn’t come out until November, but it is already No. 1 on Amazon. And if you go to the website, it says, ‘People who bought this book also bought no other books in their entire life.’” –Jimmy Fallon
And I like that title- GOING ROGUE. So when did she actually start going rogue? Pretty early I must say, if you go by her track record. Actually, she has displayed that streak many times in her life. Like when she was mayor of Wasilla she dismissed the police chief Irl Stambaugh because she thought that he was too intimidating and then while she was the Governor of Alaska she dismissed Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan citing performance-related issues, such as not being “a team player on budgeting issues” and “egregious rogue behavior.” There were many others too which I really don’t wish to get into because it’ll run into at least 400 pages (Thats the number of pages in her book). But the point I’m making is something entirely different.
There’s no doubt about the fact that Americans love anyone who is beautiful and has a mischievous streak too. Thats the reason why 114,697 Alaskans voted for her to make her the governor in 2006 in the first place. Because Alaska has a very small population of less than 700,000 Palin only had to woo just about a handful of people to reach where she did. John McCain may have indeed been justified to have picked her as his running mate because he too thought a beautiful white female American governor would be an ideal mate to make up for an old white man like himself. There’s little doubt that he would not have picked her had she not been as pretty as she is. By doing so he propelled her into believing that being a good looking American was enough for her to dream of becoming not just the Vice President but The President. And the veep candidature gave her that platform to jump from Alaska to national stage where she wooed hockey moms with her well written one liners and expensive clothing.
Spirit of freedom is good no doubt but it is this very spirit which has made her into a national problem which Newsweek is talking about. It is this spirit which has given her this belief that if she’s good enough to be a veep candidate she’s good enough to be a candidate for President. And she’s desperately working towards it. It is this belief by which she feels that because she was the governor of Alaska she can now dream of becoming the President. Just look around the world and you’ll see that there have been very few heads of state or even veeps who have reached that position because of their physical attributes. And just in case she does win Republican primaries for President in 2012 there’s one person who be more than happy for her and thats Barrack Obama, for obvious reasons.
As for that article itself, check out the link. Its not so much about Palin as it is about Obama. In any case the language they’ve used is beyond the comprehension of Sarah Palin or her translators. It is now pretty clear why she has not taken exception to it. Well, I have one more theory about this article. May be this was sponsored by Palin herself along with her publisher Harper Collins in order to promote her book. Newsweek on its part ‘obliged’ her but chose what to write (after all they have a reputation to protect) and which picture to use. Palin cannot really take exception to all of it because its working. Even her exception to the cover photo has helped generate sales. And her book is selling like hot cakes. Remember, she has a mischievous streak and has gone rogue too, in her own words?
