The Lotus effect on the BJP
August 24th, 2009It is rather ironic that today’s Times of India carries an article on what is called ‘The Lotus Effect’. According to this article the Lotus plant produces wax on it’s leaves because of which water and dirt particles glide off it’s surface making the plant clean. Symbolically, BJP may seem to indicate that Jaswant Singh’s expulsion may have left it a bit more clean than what it was though I may not agree with this entirely. Now whether Jaswant Singh represents a dirt particle or water is for anyone to guess, although BJP treated him as dirt.
The Lotus effect was again evident when another ‘particle’ Sudheendra Kulkarni glided off from it’s fold on his own. Mind you Kulkarni was an important part of the election machinery of the BJP for Lok Sabha Elections. In both these cases till very recently they were both part of the Lotus itself. Jaswant Singh metamorphosed into a ‘dirt’ particle by writing that book on Jinnah and Kulkarni on his part himself chose to glide off because of differences in ideology or biology in this context.
The third symbolic move is the impending break up of alliance with INLD in Haryana. Well, this one is sure like shaking off the ‘dirt’, dare I say. To start with INLD was not as lousy as it is today. It was a party which came into being as a credible opposition party to Congress. It even came to power in 1999 but this period saw Haryana going down like never before. There were wide spread charges of corruption and public services all but vanished from the state. I personally have a house in Gurgaon and I know how things were during that period. The Chautala family cared two hoots for the state and the state rightfully kicked them out from power in 2005. The results of the recent Lok Sabha elections wherein BJP-INLD combine were wiped out completely is another indicator of the kind of trust people have in this party. On this score I can safely say that the BJP have indeed let the ‘dirt’ glide off. And this decision has quite likely been taken in the ‘Chintan Baithak’. The question is - Is the BJP any better off after all this?
To answer this question let me start by saying that BJP desperately needs to clean up, it’s act that is. The break up with INLD can surely be seen as a clean up act though I have my doubts about the other two. Secondly, after the loss in Lok Sabha polls BJP did indeed earnestly set about cleaning up it’s act by ordering a kind of fact finding committee to ascertain the reasons for this loss. The committee has reportedly given it’s report which indicts quite a few senior leaders. The contents of this report are now in the public domain but BJP, on it’s part, has denied it. Fact is, not only does BJP needs to clean up it’s act it also needs to ’seen’ doing so. But by denying the existence of this report BJP is doing exactly the opposite. We, as the people of this country need to see the BJP admitting it’s shortcomings and making amends. They would then come across as a party which is progressive and is ready move with the times. Believe you me, they would be much better off this way than they are right now. At least they don’t seem to be.
Some of you might say that I’m indulging in too much symbolism when there is none. May be you guys are right but when I read that article in the papers today the relevance struck me and I really felt like writing about it. Some of you even might say that I’m wasting too much time on BJP and it’s future. That too at a time when Congress is ruling the roost and BJP is down in the dumps. Well, all I would like to say is that for democracy to work efficiently you need to have a credible and strong opposition. This is because if the opposition is not strong enough it will not be able to challenge the party in power. And if the ruling party is not challenged it will be like a one party rule where this party can do whatever it likes and still remain unchallenged. With a strong opposition the ruling party is always on it’s toes working for the people so that they remain in power. And that way it is the common man who emerges as the ultimate winner in this battle between the two main parties. It is for this reason that I would like the BJP to emerge stronger from this mess they are currently in. Here’s wishing them the very best!!!!!!!!!!!

well....BJP has shown the lotus effect but in a negative manner... i mean to say that expulsion of such an experienced and devoted politician will obviously cause harm to the party as well as it is the reason of bad image of Indian politics in Pakistan.
