This is a political obituary to LK Advani
August 28th, 2009Yes, this is a political obituary to LK Advani. His political career is all but over. Just that that he is yet to announce it. After what we saw on TV yesterday and today it is a foregone conclusion. He stands discredited and exposed as a man who has lied to the nation about the hijacking of IC 814 to Kandahar. And now he has no option but to resign not only from his post as leader of opposition in Lok Sabha but from his parliamentary constituency as well.
It all started off when Advani tried to distance himself from the decision taken by the then Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to release three terrorists in exchange for the passengers and that that he did not know why Jaswant Singh went to Kandahar along with the terrorists. Now we all understand pretty well that the BJP can never be comfortable talking about this ugly episode which tarnished the country’s image quite a lot, not to speak of hundreds of innocents who have since been killed by Maulana Masood Azhar’s JeM after he was released in return by them. Quite unfortunately for Advani, it so happens that a leader has to accept responsibility for his actions. But instead he tried unsuccessfully to portray an image of himself wherein he said that he was not exactly party to this decision. In a way he tried to distance himself from this entire thing.
Well, success has many relatives while losers have none. As fate would have it BJP lost rather badly in the recent elections of Lok Sabha. And thereafter, one by one all his senior colleagues in the BJP have spoken against him on his statements about the way the hijacking of IC 814 was handled. First it was Jaswant Singh, then Yashwant Sinha and now Brajesh Mishra. And I’m only talking of the Kandahar episode because otherwise there are many more like Arun Shourie, Sudheendra Kulkarni, BC Khanduri and Vasundhara Raje who have quite publicly challenged his leadership.
All these three guys have quite categorically said that LK Advani not only knew about this decision but was part of Cabinet Committee on Security which took this decision. Although Jaswant Singh has added that may be Advani has forgotten about it, however unconvincing it may sound though. Please note that now three out of five members of CCS have contradicted Advani, with Vajpayee and Advani himself being the other two. Being the statesman that he is, it is highly unlikely that Vajpayee will clarify his stand on this. Moreover, he has now retired from public life. So where does this leave Advani? Well, I’d say that it leaves him absolutely discredited and exposed, as I said earlier. I really wonder whatever happened to the ‘Loh Purush’ and strongman image which the BJP tried to project him as. Only calling him a ‘Loh Purush’ does not make him one. Does it? If he indeed had been a ‘Loh Purush’ he should have stood up like a man and faced the Congress and the people of this country and proclaimed responsibilty for the actions of the govt during this episode. But he did not. Instead, he tried to dodge responsibility. Even in his book My Country My Life he has kind of glazed through the entire episode in just a couple of pages with hardly any details. I’m sorry to say this Mr Advani, but that is not what ‘Loh Purush’ are made of.
Apart from the Kandahar episode the way the infighting within the BJP has surfaced it speaks volumes of the way things are currently being handled by them. From what I can make out, after Vajpayee left from the scene there was a deliberate attempt by Advani and Rajnath Singh to sideline those who had been close to Vajpayee. And they are the moderates who have proposed a more secular kind of policy than what Advani would like. It is precisely for this reason that they found favor with Vajpayee and not with Advani. As the way things have turned out these guys now have the opportunity to train their guns at Advani and they have done exactly that. Also, it would not be surprising at all if the public belittling of Advani was planned by all these guys after Jaswant Singh was unceremoniously sacked recently. In fact, that’s more than likely and it makes sense too.
Be that as it may, suffice to say that Advani’s position has now become untenable. He has to leave if the BJP has to survive. And for good measure he has to take Rajnath Singh with him. And I’m sure RSS will endorse this, just in case anyone is interested in knowing. So here’s wishing Advani and his Band of Brothers all the very best for their ‘retired’ lives. Take care and stay healthy. Amen!!!!…………..Sush Jaitly.
