Why Rahul Gandhi does not deserve a cabinet berth?
May 18th, 2009On the face of it my statement may provoke diabolical response from people. After all, they say that he is one of the main reasons behind the victory of Congress. He may be but I have my very strong reasons to say that he’s not yet ready to be a minister in the cabinet.
Rahul is nearly 39 years old now (He was born on 19 Jun 1970). Originally from Doon School he graduated in Arts from Rollins College, Florida. He has also done his M Phil in Developmental studies from Trinity College, Cambridge. He entered politics in May 2004 when he contested and won parliamentary elections from Amethi. Going by his qualifications and credentials it would appear that he’s a deserving candidate for a berth in the cabinet, especially if you consider that there were people like Shibu Soren who never went to college in their lives but were ministers in the previous cabinet. But there is more to it.
Consider this, a couple of years ago he made a statement that when he was in St Stephens College for about a year or so people who asked questions were looked down upon. The college, off course, denied any such thing. You tell me guys if this is a statement of a mature person? I know it’s not. I also know that it’s a very minor issue if you consider that we are talking of a cabinet berth for him. It may well be but unfortunately this is not the only issue. There are many more. Read on.
During the campaigning for assembly elections in UP in 2007 he made a statement that had anyone from his family been the PM of the country, Babri Masjid would not have been demolished. Please note that PV Narsimha Rao of Congress was the PM. As a result, it created an unnecessary controversy within the Congress and this statement of his was subsequently withdrawn. Again, not a big deal but still it shows an immature person who ridicules members of his own party openly in public.
Next was his statement on Bangladesh when he said that it was his family which was responsible for creation of Bangladesh which in effect reflected very poorly not only on our defense forces but Bangladesh’s resistance movement as well. Quite naturally, it created another controversy by undermining their contributions. Now that’s criminal. It once again shows how badly is he obsessed is he with his family.
Lastly, in Jan this year he took David Milliband on a ‘Poverty Tour’ of the country where he showed the British Foreign Secretary how poor we are and in what squalor do our poor people live. And that too in his own constituency Amethi. How stupid! How immature can you be? Why the hell was he showing off our poor and their miseries to British Foreign Secretary? What did he expect from Milliband? What can he do about our poor? Shows a person who is not very mature and needs time to grow up. Mind you I’m talking of Jan this year. He couldn’t have matured in just the last five months.
It is for these very reasons that I say that he does not deserve to be in the cabinet, for now at least. Let him keep working for the party for a couple of years while being an under study to any senior minister like Pranab Mukherjee to learn the basics of governance before giving him this opportunity. He can always be inducted later on.
Well, that’s what I feel. Do any of you guys feel differently? Do let me know.

Yes. I agree with you that Rahul is not mature enough. At the age of nearly 40, if he do not know how to talk, he will never learn it on his own. He is projected as a future PM and I think he definitely will become PM one day. Let him become a cabinet minister and learn things first. Otherwise, he will become PM directly if Congress gets another chance.
